Jason Willis of the completely wonderful but now mostly defunct blog "Scar Stuff" created these two amazing Halloween compilation CD's that he originally gave away as Halloween gifts. Although many of the musical files that Jason so kindly shared have been pulled down off his blog, these two gems remain. I found his blog long after its heyday, but I used it as a jumping off point to search online for copies of the albums he had previously shared. 12 and a half Gigs later, I have quite the Halloween music and sound effect collection. Even with out all the files being available on his blog, it still continues to be a great resource for information about Halloween music and sound effects.

Jason's two compilations are very well done and ready to use for your Halloween shindig, I am actually going to be using both at my Halloween party this year.So check out Spook Party and Ghoul-Arama you'll be glad you did, I am.

During the 1960s, Screaming Lord Sutch was known for his horror-themed stage show, dressing as Jack the Ripper, pre-dating the shock rock antics of Alice Cooper. Accompanied by his band, the Savages, he started by coming out of a black coffin. Other props included knives and daggers, skulls and "bodies".

Despite self-confessed lack of vocal talent, he released horror-themed singles during the early to mid-'60s, the most popular "Jack the Ripper", covered live and on record by garage rock bands including the White Stripes, the Gruesomes, the Black Lips and the Horrors for their debut EP.

Wendy the (Very) Good Witch reminded me without knowing she was reminding me that I had not finished posting photos from our trip to New Orleans. So thanks Wendy, and why yes we did go to the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum.

The New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum is one of the most unique, and interesting, small museums in the country. Taking all the mysteries, the secrets, the history and folklore of rituals, zombies, of gris-gris, of Voodoo Queens and all that jazz, and putting it all in one place in the heart of the New Orleans French Quarter.

I'm positive that is a real human skull.

If I remember right I was pretty hammered the night before which explains why I look like a zombie. That is a painting of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.

I hope you enjoyed the photos. The New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum is small but full of interesting things see and learn about New Orleans Voodoo. So . . .
Back on July 9th Universal Orlando announced that guests at Halloween Horror Nights 21 will be able to experience a house based on their new prequel film "The Thing" before the movie even opens in theaters.

My wife Jen says "The Thing, whats that?" So I go on to explain to her that this is a new movie that is a prequel to a really good movie that I think we watched together when we first started dating, but she doesn't remember the movie. Then I go on to explain how John Carpenter made the original staring Kurt Russel, but that it was really based off the 1951 B Sci-fi film The Thing from Another World. Which really just made explaining it more difficult. So I pulled it up on Netflix and we watched John Carpenter's The Thing.

Which Jen really enjoyed, and sort of remembered seeing parts of. I know we watched it together, but to her defense it was probably 15 years ago. Jen loves the first Halloween film, so I was telling her that Tommy Doyle and Lindsey Wallace (The kids that Laurie [Jamie Lee Curtis] is babysitting) are watching The Thing from Another World on TV in the Movie.

Pretty cool that John Carpenter loved the movie The Thing from Another World so much that he included it in what would become one of his greatest films, and he would go on to remake it four years later.

One Morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire - 572 people - walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness. They left behind their clothes, their money, all of their essentials. Even their dogs were abandoned, tied to posts and left to starve. No One knows why. A search party dispatched by the U.S. Army eventually discovered the remains of nearly 300 of Friar's evacuees. Many had frozen to death. Others were cruelly and mysteriously slaughtered. The bodies of the remaining citizens are still unaccounted for. Over the years, a quiet cover-up operation managed to weave the story of Friar into the stuff of legends and backwoods fairy tales. The town has slowly repopulated, but the vast wilderness is mostly untracked, with the northern-most stretches off limits to local hunters and loggers. In 2008, the coordinates for the "YELLOWBRICKROAD" trail head were declassified. The first official expedition into a dark and twisted wilderness will attempt to solve the mystery of the lost citizens of Friar...and reach the end of the trail.

Saint Louis Cemetery No. 2

St. Louis #2 is located some 3 blocks back from St. Louis #1, bordering Claiborne Avenue. It was consecrated in 1823. A number of notable jazz and rhythm & blues musicians are buried here, including Danny Barker and Ernie K. Doe. Also entombed here is Dominique You, a notorious pirate who assisted in the defense of the city against the British in the Battle of New Orleans. Andre Cailloux, African-American hero of the American Civil War is also buried here.

The cemetery received minor flooding during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and its tombs seemed virtually untouched by the storm when the water went down, aside from the brownish waterline visible on all structures that were flooded. There are also many notable citizens of 19th and 20th century New Orleans laid to rest here. For example the tomb of Blessed Mother Henriette DeLille, who is a candidate for sainthood by the Catholic Church, Jean Baptiste Dupeire (1795–1874) prominent citizen of New Orleans, among others. It was listed in National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

I found this large hammer laying on top of a tomb. I had to hold the camera up above my head to get these pictures (I'm 6'3). Grave robbers? Vampire slayer? We'll never know for sure, but what ever was going on, it sure is a weird place to leave a big hammer.

St. Louis #3 is located some 2 miles back from the French Quarter, some 30 blocks from the Mississippi, fronting Esplanade Avenue near Bayou St. John. It opened in 1854. The crypts on average are more elaborate than at the other St. Louis cemeteries, including a number of fine 19th century marble tombs. Those entombed include ragtime composer Paul Sarebresole and photographer E. J. Bellocq.

St. Louis #3 also includes a Greek Orthodox section. The cemetery was heavily flooded during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but its tombs escaped relatively unscathed.

Bananas Foster

This is a super simple but very fun and flavorful dessert recipe,
just don't burn your house down making it!

Bananas Foster

1⁄2 stick butter

1 cup brown sugar

1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon

1⁄4 cup banana liqueur

4 bananas, cut in half lengthwise, then halved

1⁄4 cup dark rum

4 scoops vanilla ice cream

Combine the butter, sugar, and cinnamon in a flambé pan or skillet.

Place the pan over low heat, and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves.

Stir in the banana liqueur, and then place the bananas in the pan.

When the banana sections soften and begin to brown, carefully add the rum.

Continue to cook the sauce until the rum is hot, and then tip the pan slightly to ignite the rum (or light with long match or long lighter, be very careful).

When the flames subside, lift the bananas out of the pan and place four pieces over each portion of ice cream.

Generously spoon warm sauce over the top of the ice cream and serve immediately.

This is the actual Bananas Foster recipe from the original source and creator of this dessert: Brennan's Restaurant.

In 1951, Chef Paul created Bananas Foster. The scrumptious dessert was named for Richard Foster, who served with Owen Edward Brennan, (the founder of Brennan's Restaurant) on the New Orleans Crime Commission. Richard Foster was a frequent customer of Brennan's and a very good friend of Owen.

Drive-In Movie Memories

I watched this documentary on PBS today and really enjoyed it. I found a cut-up version on YouTube that shows most of the documentary (44 minutes out of the 58 minutes). The clips on YouTube are being used to promote the sale of the DVD on Amazon.com. There are some weird parts where the voices blend over each other, but other then that it is very watchable and very interesting. If you read my blog with any regularity you know that we are fortunate enough to still have access to two fully functional drive-in theaters that we like to visit regularly. Its getting to be the drive-in time of year for those of you who don't live in the sunny south. You should do a little Internet research and find a drive-in near your home to visit this summer.

I own it on DVD, but when I saw it was on Netflix today I just had to click play. I had forgotten how much I really enjoy this movie. Terrific story, haunting comic book style visuals, a near perfect soundtrack, and interestingly messed up characters makes for a dark tale of revenge and true love. Plus all the Halloween and Devil's Night imagery doesn't hurt either. I had forgotten that Tony Todd was it as well.

A friend just turned us on to "Being Human" on the Syfy Channel." We watched the whole first season over the course of the week and really enjoyed it. Being Human" is a supernatural drama on the Syfy Channel in the U.S. and is based on a British show with the same name on the BBC. It calls its self a drama and it mostly is but I have found myself laughing aloud at least once an episode. We're hooked and are glad to see that it has been renewed for a second season in the US. The first season started in January and just ended, but you can view most of the episodes online at Syfy.

Easy Strawberry Sorbet Recipe

Here's the recipe in a boring text format so you can copy and save it.

1 1/2 Cups sugar
3 Cups water
3 Pounds of fresh cleaned and cut strawberries (Frozen will work)
3 Tablespoons lemon juice

Combine sugar and water in a heavy saucepan.
Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to low and simmer until all the sugar has been dissolved.
Remove from heat, and refrigerate until chilled.
Puree cleaned and cut strawberries; add lemon juice and sugar water.
Mix well and pour in to the ice cream maker's canister.
Follow your ice cream makers instructions to complete the freezing process.

Quick and Dirty Reviews - Insidious

I'm not much for doing big drawn out reviews. But with that being said, we went and saw Insidious on Saturday and were very happy we did. It starts out like a 70's slow burner, building good tension here and there. It has tons of good unexpected startles. I thought the story was good and interesting. It has a few laughs too. There was one moment toward the end where CGI is used in a “hallway” scene (don’t want to give anything away) that I thought was cheap looking and unnecessary (but who am I). I read John Squires review over at his blog Freddy in Space, and I have to mostly agree with him. I loved the first three quarters of the movie, and the last quarter was good too (but not quite as scary as the first part of the movie). Would I recommend this movie? Yes whole heartedly! I thoroughly enjoyed it, as did my wife. We jumped, we laughed, and she even covered her eyes a couple times. I heard a kid tell his friends that he got so scared at one of the startles that he thought he “sharted”.

Is it Poltergeist? No.
Is it the Exorcist? No.
Is it a fun, creepy, spooky, way to spend an hour and 42 minutes, HELL YES!

I recently replaced my big clunky 60Gig iPod (it wasn't holding a charge very well anymore) with a new iPod touch. I downloaded a photography App called Hipstamatic and fell in love with taking photos all over again. The App has been around since 2009, so many of you have probably already heard of it.

According to the Hipstamatic facebook page "The Hipstamatic App is an iPhone App that seeks to recreate the magic started in the 80's with 'the little plastic camera with the golden shutter."

A little history of where the Hipstamatic came from, via the Hipstamatic facebook page again. "In 1982 Bruce and Winston Dorbowski began producing a DIY camera made entirely of plastic after dropping out of art school. The molds were made by hand and each camera was assembled in the brothers' cabin workspace on the Wisconsin River in Merrill, Wisconsin. Each camera included a golden yellow shutter button which become a cult icon in 1983. By the end of 1984 the group had manufactured and sold 157 units. It's a super fun, easy to use, retro/toy camera photography application. I read that there are something like 288 possible combinations of flash, film and lens for all of the currently available add on packs (called Hipstapaks). I missed two limited time Hipstapaks, so I'm missing a couple film types, and a lens or two. I spent a total of $7.93 to get the App and 6 Hipstapaks, and I feel like it was worth every cent. I've been having a lot of fun trying different combos of flash, film and lens.

So you'll probably see me posting what appear to be old photos fairly often now. I'm going to try to get back in some sort of routine with the blog. Schools been kind of overwhelming lately, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel finally. Five classes left!

I'm always finding the coolest and most unexpected things on the Internet. Just happened to be a new friend this time! I finally got to meet Carrie Mae from Creepy Cupcakes. We have been online friends for about two years or so and finally met face to face today! I can honestly say that Carrie is the first person that I have ever met in real life that I had only known previously from the Internet. Here I am a big ol' 6'3, 41 year old guy who talks to strangers from all over the world everyday as part of his job and I was super nervous for some reason to meet Carrie and her husband. But just like old friends, once we started talking that all went away. I now know why we hit it off so well online, because we really do have a bunch of stuff in common. Carrie is almost exactly how I pictured her, except she is freakishly short. I'm just playing, she is a sweetheart and of normal height. Meeting Carrie and her husband was the cherry on top of my Halloween season this year. Hopefully these are the first of many memories that the four of us will capture in photos (even though its just the two of us in these pictures).

Went to the book store on Halloween afternoon and got some new reading material I'm excited about. Now if I can just find the time to sit down and read them.

Went to Michael's Crafts this afternoon to use my 50% off one item coupon and to load up on the 2 for a dollar paints. I've got a little Día de los Muertos project planned for me and the Mrs. The only after Halloween decoration type item I scored today was that skull at Michael's for half off, I think it was $2.98.

No good deals on after Halloween stuff this year. All the stores I checked out were wiped out of the good stuff. Oh well.

To Die For Carmel Corn

10 ½ - Ounce box of microwave popcorn, popped
(Butter flavor or similar flavor)

2 - Sticks of Butter = 1 cup
(No Margarine)

2 - Cups of dark brown sugar, packed

½ - Cup corn syrup
(Clear Karo Syrup)

½ - Teaspoon of salt

1 - Teaspoon of vanilla extract
(Not imitation)

½ - Teaspoon of baking soda

Preheat oven to 250*

After popping the corn in the microwave I like to pour it out on a sheet pan and then transfer it by hand to a large lightly greased (Pam works fine) roasting pan, this is to make sure no un-popped kernels make it in to the batch.

Combine the butter, brown sugar, and Karo syrup in a heavy saucepan, non stick works too. Once it’s all melted bring to a boil over medium heat; cook for five minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add vanilla and baking soda mix in well and then pour mixture over popcorn. Use a rubber spatula or large plastic spoon mix popcorn to coat with the caramel.

Place in preheated oven for one hour, removing every 20 minutes to stir popcorn and caramel mixture.

Remove from oven and let cool for about 15 minutes, stir one last time to break up final product.

Store in an airtight container.
Makes 25 to 27 cups.
